TABS (Tutorial Academic Building Self-Esteem)

Our agency addresses issues that children with sickle cell disease and conditions face in their daily lives. When dealing with children with sickle cell disease we believe it is vital that we do not just focus on the physical complications of the disease but areas of their well being, academic and social development.

Children with sickle cell may feel singled out and usually feel different as some complications related the disease may influence their self-esteem and self-image.

Children with sickle cell disease have anemia and thus may experience fatigue toward the end of the school day. They may not be allowed to do things other children do because of physical limitations. They may also not be able to participate in a lot of social activities. These children often have frequent health crises and complications which affects their school attendance and ultimately their academics.

The academic performance of some children with sickle cell disease may not be consistent with their innate ability. These are a few reasons our tutorial program is very important for children who suffer with sickle cell conditions.

TABS is a tutorial program in which we aim to enhance a child’s self-image through academic skill success and to teach a child a sense of self-worth and independence and to assist them in achieving the same academic success and social skills demonstrated by their peers. We provide remedial and academic instructions in reading, comprehension, creative writing with emphasis on FCAT, and Math. We recently implemented Spanish as a second language for the children where we will help them to gain an understanding of commonly use words and phrases. The program offers cultural and social experiences, in which students may attend museums, theatre, educational attractions, theme parks, summer camp, family socials, and community celebrations.
